RELIGION

The focus in Religion is learning the parts of the Mass, becoming familiar with the Sacraments and preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation which takes place in second grade.  All students participate in school-wide liturgies as lectors and gift bearers during Mass.

LANGUAGE ARTS

The ELA (English language Arts) concepts taught throughout second grade are accomplished using the Journeys program. Each week students focus on a story, phonics skills, comprehension skills, grammar, fluency, vocabulary strategy and writing skills. Journeys features complex anchor texts that challenge students, complex lesson plans that let teachers target the needs of all students and assessments with digital tools that help track classroom progress. Strengthening key literacy skills will aid in ensuring that all students are tracking toward reading proficiency.

MATHEMATICS

Math is a challenging program that begins with a review of basic facts. The children are introduced to place values, counting money, addition and subtraction with regrouping, basic concepts in geometry and measurement and problem solving.

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE/HEALTH

Throughout the year, students complete holiday projects, Scholastic News activities and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) projects, which are cross-curricular and integrate the second grade social studies and science standards. Social studies topics include communities, map skills and holidays. Science focuses on plants, the Earth, space, planets and physical sciences. Lessons on healthy eating habits, personal health, injury prevention, safety and alcohol & tobacco awareness are also taught.

HANDWRITING

Our handwriting program works hand in hand with the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting program. The series encourages the students to become better writers through daily practice. The beginning of the year is focused on mastering printing while cursive writing is introduced into the curriculum. Students are encouraged to learn the basic formation of letters which they use in the daily writing process.
